The acoustic guitar dates back to the 12th century with the Renaissance and Baroque guitars. They were smaller, more delicate and quieter than today's modern classical guitar. There are three main types of modern acoustic guitar: the classical guitar (nylon-string guitar), the steel-string acoustic guitar, and the archtop guitar.

Plucked or strummed, the mandolin is from the lute family. It came from the mandore, the soprano of the lute family. The mandolin comes in many shapes, but most often it's round or teardrop with scrolls or other projections. A mandolin may have an f-hole, or a single round or oval sound hole.

Sometimes called uke, the ukulele is a member of the guitar family. It originated in the 19th century in Hawaii, gaining popularity in the early 20th century. The tone and volume of the ukulele vary with size and construction. Ukes come in 4 sizes: soprano, concert, tenor, and baritone.
